Final tips

Okay, so you have completed all five tutorials! You have created lasers, extra life chimes, energy shields, explosions, and even mixed sounds together to create more complex effects.

But now you need the "this" sound for your game. What next?

Experiment!

The best way to get feeling of SFXCreator is to experiment with different settings and effects. You know how to sound envelopes, waveforms, and effects now, so try combining them in different ways to create unique sounds.

There is no single "correct" way to create particular sound!

Don't be afraid to just blindly turn various dials and see what happens. With every created sound, you will get better feeling of how to achieve effects you want to hear.

INFO

Remember, that every section in SFXAsset Inspector has reset button that restores all parameters in that section to default values. So, dont be afraid to experiment and go crazy - you can always reset everything back to default!

Start simple

When creating a new sound effect, you should already know what sound it is going to be. Start with baseline settings and then fine-tune from there.

  • Explosion? Start with noise waveform and "explosive" envelope
  • A magic or powerup chime? Use Arpeggio effect!
  • Need buzzing? Use high frequency Tremolo, Vibrato or FM Synth effects!
  • Wind? Use noise waveform with high frequency and long release time!

When you will know how to get yourself to baseline sound, the rest is just fine-tuning parameters until it feels good.

Mutate!

Every section in SFXAsset has special Mutate button. It changes all parameters in that section randomly, creating a variation of current sound. If you feel you are close, try mutating some sections to see if you can get even better sound. You can even mutate whole sound at once by using Mutate button at the top of Inspector.

Out of ideas? Go random!

If you don't have idea how to create your desired sound or just want to explore what is possible, definitely try using Randomization feature of SFXCreator. When you press Randomize button at the top of Inpsector, SFXCreator will generate a completely random sound effect for you. It will pick random waveform, shape random envelope and apply few random effects with random parameters.

When you are lurking for particular sound, you can try randomizing sound until you find something that is close to what you want. Then you can alter the sound from there.

You can also Randomize just one section of the sound by using proper button in that section. This is useful when you have good base sound, but want to explore different effects or envelope shapes.

Thats it!

Thank you for following tutorials!

The rest of documentation is reference material about SFXCreator assets, effects and parameters. You can use it to learn more about specific features of SFXCreator and how to use them.

Please take a look at Modules Documentation. All SFXCreator modules are documented there with some examples of how to use them.

Happy sound designing! 💪
